Forsyth County’s top elections official said long-pending plans for a new headquarters for the agency are moving ahead with the project expected to go out for bid this week.

Elections chief Barbara Luth said the 20,000-square-foot building on Sawnee Drive is expected to be complete by the end of the year. She said it will replace a current 13,000-square-foot operation located in two different spots, forcing officials to drive back and forth and hampering coordination.

Luth also said the more than $2 million project should give them space to add people and equipment as the county’s voter base grows.

Luth said they’d hoped the new digs would be done for the Nov. 8 election at one time. Officials now figure that a move at the end of the year will give them enough lead time to plan for the 2018 election cycle.
