The Museum Houseboat, considered by some to be an “eyesore” on the shores of Lake Lanier, will be removed on Monday, Feb. 27.

The abandoned vessel got its name from campers at Baldridge Campground in Cumming, who treated it as an attraction on the lake, according to Lake Lanier Association Executive Director Joanna Cloud.

The boat has been declared debris by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Cloud said it could potentially harm the reservoir’s water.

“While it certainly is an unusual sight on Lake Lanier, it ultimately is a public safety and water quality hazard that needs to be removed from the reservoir that provides our drinking water,” Cloud said in a statement.

The Lake Lanier Association, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Forsyth County are coordinating the removal. It will begin at 9 a.m. Monday.

This is the third vessel to be removed from the lake using state funds from this fiscal year. Forsyth County is matching a portion of the state money for this project.
