Driver says $280,000 Rolls-Royce carjacked in Cobb by armed men

The man's friend let him borrow the luxury car for New Year's Eve.

Despite apparently doing everything he could think of to get away, a man lost his friend’s $280,000 luxury car in a Cobb County carjacking.

David Gray was driving the Rolls-Royce he borrowed on Mableton Parkway during New Year’s Eve, he told Channel 2 Action News.

He had just pulled out of his friend’s neighborhood and believed he was being followed by a group of people. He tried to lose them on Felton Lane, he told the news station.

The owner of the Rolls-Royce, Stormy Wellington, let Gray borrow it while she was away on business.

“Somebody had to have been following him or watching my car,” Wellington said. “Thank God I have multiple cars, but my Rolls-Royce is my favorite car.”

Gray said he had a gun that he was permitted to carry, but that didn’t stop the attack.

“Once they boxed me in, they jumped out with big guns,” Gray told Channel 2.

Cobb County police spokesman Sgt. Wayne Delk said a handful of suspects got out of two vehicles after cornering the luxury car.

“A maroon Suburban and a black Impala,” Delk said. “Four to five men got out, armed with long guns. Rifles.”

At first, Gray said he wouldn't give up the keys, Channel 2 reported.

Then one of the men fired a bullet in the air.

“My life flashed right before my eyes,” Gray said. “I really thought I was dead.”

Gray said they stole his watch, jumped into the Rolls-Royce and took off.

“As they were leaving with the vehicle, the victim attempted to stop them by shooting out the tires,” Delk said.

Gray said there was no way he could safely use his weapon.

“I would’ve been dead even I just put out my gun, because I was just outnumbered,” Gray said.

Police said if you're victim of a carjacking, just let them take what they want.

Wellington had a message for the carjackers.

“At this point, leave it on the side of the road and walk off and just give me my car,” Wellington said.

The car has GPS tracking, police said.
