Police are searching for the person who falsely reported that someone was shot Sunday in Brookhaven.

“Officers have learned that the call was a prank call meant to attract a large police presence,” the department said in a post on Facebook.

Indeed it did. Police and North Metro SWAT officers descended upon the 3400 block of Rennes Drive.

As they pulled up, a gunshot rang. But it turned out to be a resident accidentally firing a weapon they’d retrieved for protection during the confusion, police said.

No one was injured.

By Tuesday no suspects had been charged, police told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

A motive isn’t clear.

The act of making hoax calls to draw large law enforcement presence is commonly referred to as SWATing. Police warn against the dangerous prank.
