Cobb Mentoring Matters is seeking 100 mentors to assist students at Riverside Intermediate School in Mableton.

Riverside is the first and only public school in Cobb County on the list of the state's chronically failing schools for not measuring up to state standards for three consecutive years.

Adults, ages 18 and older, are invited to apply to be a mentor to Riverside’s second through fifth-grade students.

Volunteer mentors must complete an application, supply two references, undergo a background check and attend a 90-minute orientation.

If approved, mentors will spend 45 minutes to one hour each week for the remainder of this school year on school grounds during the day or in the after school program.

Throughout the state, there are 153 schools on that list of chronically failing schools, according to the Governor's Office of Student Achievement.
