UPDATE: The Irwin Street closure has been extended again.

The extension is necessary after inspectors determined that a recently constructed ramp to a speed table —  a wide and flat, raised speed bump — was “too steep for most vehicles” to travel across safely “even at minimal speeds,” according to a Monday news release. The project’s contractor, Astra, is working to fix the safety issue.

The Atlanta Beltline got a permit from the city to remain closed until Thursday at midnight.

ORIGINAL STORY (April 17): The closure of a major stretch of the Atlanta Beltine has been extended.

The 24-hour-a-day closure began March 20 and was supposed to end Monday, but will continue until April 24, according to a news release. It impacts both pedestrians and drivers navigating the Old Fourth Ward area near the popular Krog Street Market.

Beltline contractors closed Irwin Street — between Sampson Street/Auburn Avenue and Krog Street — in order to construct a portion of the Eastside Trail extension that will head south to Kirkwood Avenue. Workers are installing structures including a speed table (a wide speed bump), sidewalks and rapid flashing beacons for pedestrian crossing.

Detour routes have been established to route vehicular and pedestrian traffic around the closure.

  • For vehicular traffic on Irwin: If traveling east, turn right at Auburn Avenue, left at Randolph Street, left at Edgewood Avenue and left at Krog Street. If traveling west, turn left at Krog Street, right at Edgewood Avenue and right at Auburn Avenue.
  • To access the Eastside Trail: The Eastside Trail can be accessed from the west side by way of John Wesley Dobbs Avenue, Highland Avenue and East Avenue (via Alaska Avenue). Note that only the East Avenue access point is ADA-accessible. The Eastside Trail can be accessed from the east side by way of Elizabeth Street. Use Irwin Street/Lake Avenue, making a left on Elizabeth.

The Atlanta Beltline is a network of parks, trails and transit on a 22-mile former railroad corridor circling Atlanta's intown neighborhoods.
