A DeKalb County student was arrested Tuesday after a gun was found in his backpack at Miller Grove High, district officials confirmed.

The weapon was found after a teacher searched the pack because it was a type not allowed in classrooms, according to the school system. The district wouldn’t say what kind of gun it was.

The 18-year-old student’s identity hasn’t been released. Police are investigating why he allegedly had the firearm at the Lithonia school.

Because of the ongoing investigation, a district representative declined to release further information that was was included in a letter sent to parents Tuesday.

The letter said “all elements of the Code of Student Conduct and District policy have been followed.”

“Please,” Principal M. L. Priester wrote, “encourage your children to report any suspicious activity to you and the school.”
