Alpharetta residents will receive their new, 18-gallon bins for glass recycling Nov. 13 to 18, with Republic Services resuming curbside glass pick-ups on Dec. 5, city officials said.

Earlier this year, recycling companies stopped accepting glass, saying it was prone to shattering and contaminating other recyclables, such as paper and cardboard. Residents were told to stop putting out glass with their recyclables.

Alpharetta has opted for an extra fee to pay for separate glass pick-ups – hence, the new glass-only bins. Paper, plastic and other recyclables will be placed in their current recycling carts. An additional truck will be added to each service route to collect only glass.

Those who do not want to participate in the service can ask that a glass recycling bin not be delivered to them by visiting www.alpharetta.ga.us/glass and submitting a short form.
