With lives and homes destroyed by violent storms, South Georgia needs help. And Acworth's cops are pitching in.

The department posted on Facebook that it is collecting donations through the Disaster Relief Alliance for those affected by the weather system that killed at least 15 people in Georgia.

Residents there are doing what they can, but they're already reeling from Jan. 2 storms thought to caused about $50 million in damage.

Channel 2's Tony Thomas reports.

Acworth is asking for blankets and Gatorade, noting that cases are easier to stack.

Their first trip will be Monday, so have your donations in by 6 p.m. Sunday to the Acworth Detention Center, 4400 Acworth Industrial Drive NW.

They department plans on making a second trip.

As for others in Cobb helping, Marietta sent eight utility workers and four trucks down Monday to help restore power.

Acworth did a similar donation drive when folks in Gatlinburg were fighting and recovering from wildfire last last year.
