A Henry County Commissioner, under scrutiny over his residency status, has resigned.

Brian Preston notified Gov. Nathan Deal in a letter dated July 8 that “it is with regret that I tender my resignation from the Henry County Board of Commissioners - Distrct 2, effective immediately.” He did not give a reason for his departure.

Preston is leaving office two weeks before he had originally announced he’d be leaving.

Preston has taken heat recently from some residents in the community who said he should leave office because he no longer officially lives in Henry. The Ethics in Government, a newly-formed citizens watchdog group had vowed to go to court if Preston had resigned. The ethics group to its case to the Henry Election & Registration board allegeding he didn't have the right to vote in Henry.

Preston's letter to the governor was submitted a day after the Henry Elections & Registration board ruled he was eligible to vote.
