Fulton County's buildings will get some much-needed body work in the coming years.
Commissioners on Wednesday approved a plan that calls for them to spend nearly $300 million over five years to fix up its buildings, many of which have broken elevators and leaky roofs.
They will decide at a later meeting whether to float bonds to pay for about $77 million worth of those improvements. They already budgeted $20 million for some improvements that are underway; the remainder of the money would go toward preventative and other maintenance and to beautifying buildings once the repairs have been made.
"This is long overdue," Vice Chairman Liz Hausmann said, noting that the Fulton County Government Center "leaks like a sieve."
Dennis King, Fulton County's facilities project director, said the county still has "a way to go before we stop the bleeding." The useful life of many critical systems has been exceeded, he said.
"The question is not if the systems will fail, it's when they will fail," he said. "This is a must."
