A Stone Mountain High School student was recognized by the Georgia Department of Education as a Star English Learner Student, an honor given annually to students who use English as a secondary language.

Amina Mohammad, a senior at Stone Mountain High, will be honored at Georgia Schools Superintendent Richard Woods’ Excellence in Achievement reception on May 10.

One of Amina’s teachers, Jenevee Spence, also will be honored, recognized as a top Star English to Speakers of Other Languages teacher from the district.

The honors recognize achievements in ESOL programs, which give support to students who use English as a secondary language.

Star English Learner Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average and be on course to graduate during the present school year. In turn, the star student selects the star teacher.

“English learners have to work double to meet today’s rigorous academic standards,” said Sandra Núñez, director of DeKalb Schools’ English Language Studies Program/Title III.

The superstar created a scholarship fund for one student each at four universities.
