Georgia's elementary school performance declined in 2016 while the performance at other grade levels changed little from 2015.

The results of the 2016 College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) released Thursday show elementary schools on average scoring 71.7 points on the 0 to 110 point scale.

It’s a decline of 4.3 points from 2015, when the state’s elementary schools scored an average of 76 points. On the scale established by the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement, 60 is the minimum score to pass and 70 is a “C.”

The 2016 middle school score was up slightly to 71.5 points from 71.2 while high schools dropped a tenth of a point to 75.7.

The Georgia Department of Education assembles the CCRPI and attributed the drop in elementary school scores to performance with certain groups of students, such as the “economically disadvantaged,” students with disabilities and students who are learning to speak English.

Schools get points for performance on a variety of measures, including graduation and attendance rates, STEM certification, inclusion of students with disabilities in general classrooms or participation in accelerated classes like Advanced Placement. By far the most important measure, though, is performance on state standardized tests, currently the Georgia Milestones.
