The DeKalb County School District says community members with concerns about its annual operating budget can email the district to get those concerns heard.

The announcement comes via press release four days after the final public hearing on the $1 billion budget. District officials did not make the detailed budget available until just before the last of two public hearings on the document were held.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution initially was denied access to the document, with Chief Communications and Community Relations Officer Eileen Houston-Stewart saying the full document would be shared after the board’s first vote on Monday. She emailed a copy of the document during the school board’s Committee of the Whole meeting on Monday.

According to the Georgia Open Records Act, public documents are to be made available “without delay.”

Tucker resident Kirk Lunde admonished the district during public comments Monday at the school board's monthly meeting after he said the budget suddenly appeared online last weekend.

“How can you expect us to give you feedback on a budget we haven’t seen?” he asked.
