Charges could be filed against a Gwinnett County transit bus driver that allegedly ran a red light Monday afternoon, causing a fatal wreck that killed the driver of a FedEx delivery truck.

The wreck happened at the intersection of Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard and Central Avenue in southwest Atlanta, where it also caused damage to a nearby building, according to Officer John Chafee with Atlanta police.

Investigators believe the bus was traveling northbound on Central Avenue when the driver ran a red light and struck the FedEx truck, which was traveling westbound on Ralph David Abernathy, Chafee said. Both vehicles struck a building at one corner of the intersection, according to police.

The FedEx truck’s driver, Jorge L. Pena, 41, of McDonough, died at the scene of the wreck. The bus driver, whose name was not released, was transported to the hospital in critical condition, police said. There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the crash.

The intersection remained closed for several hours Monday while police investigated the crash and removed the vehicles. The extent of the structural damage to the building had not been determined late Monday.
