The death of a 3-year-old southwest Atlanta boy last weekend from blunt force trauma has prompted a criminal investigation.

Kejuan Mason was pronounced dead at Atlanta Medical Center after a paramedic performed CPR on him at his residence Saturday afternoon, according to the incident report. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office announced the cause of death, police Lt. Carven Tyus said Tuesday.

When police arrived at the Cleveland Avenue address, a first responder from Grady Memorial Hospital was attending to Mason, police said.

His guardian, Glenndra Landrina, said she gave the kids — there were four other children in the house at the time — cupcakes to eat and said (Mason) “appeared to be choking on a cupcake.” Landrina said she and a man named Hurbert Morris attempted CPR and said responders took too long to arrive, according to the report.

Landrina “changed her story” afterward and said Mason “was choking on the cupcake they made,” police said. They removed the cupcake and said he was “fine breathing and talking later.”

They said Mason went to sleep later, but was unresponsive when they checked on him, according to the report. They called 911 then.

Police said Landrina didn’t want to provide the mother’s name or phone number. Homicide and special victims officers then were called to the scene.

The report also said the house “was infested with roaches.”

No suspect has been identified, police spokesman Donald Hannah told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday.

The Division of Family and Children Services is involved in the investigation, Tyus confirmed.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with expenses.
