A woman was arrested after she took a security officer’s gun, causing it to discharge inside the Sam Nunn Federal Center in downtown Atlanta, authorities said Friday.
The Federal Protective Service responded Wednesday after learning shots had been fired on the ninth floor of the Forsyth Street facility, an agency official said in a statement.
The Environmental Protection Agency is on that floor.
According to the FPS official, the woman, later identified as Barbara Ann Robbins, became disorderly in an EPA office space and the officer tried “to escort her from the building and calm her down.”
Robbins “became uncooperative, bit the officer, and a struggle ensued,” the FPS official said.
That was when she "reportedly gained control of the officer’s weapon and the weapon was discharged into some chairs,” according to the FPS.
The officer was able to restrain Robbins, who was arrested and taken to the Department of Justice pre-detention facility for processing, the agency said.
“The officer was treated for the bite,” the FPS official said. “No one else was injured during the incident.”
The shooting remains under investigation.
