A man shot and killed one of two teenagers who tried to rob him Wednesday night as he walked his dog, police said.

The 44-year-old man told investigators a white Lexus with Florida tags pulled next to him in the 5800 block of Cedar Croft Lane near Lithonia.

Two teens jumped out of the vehicle and attempted to rob the man at gunpoint, DeKalb police spokeswoman Shiera Campbell said Thursday.

That, police said, is when the man pulled out his own gun, shot one of teens and called 911.

Officers responded about 10:30 p.m. and found the teen in the road with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

The second teen and the driver of the Lexus got away. Officers used police dogs to search for them, according to Channel 2 Action News. The search was unsuccessful.

Officers are searching for another suspect who got away.

It is unclear if the second teen or the driver were shot.

Police have not released the names of those involved in the incident.

While the investigation is ongoing, “the evidence is leaning toward no charges at this time,” police Lt. Rob Bryant told Channel 2.
