A man was taken into police custody Sunday morning in connection with the fatal shooting of a taxi driver in a Chamblee neighborhood.

Officers found a woman in her 40s shot once in the head and still behind the wheel of her cab about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The car drove up a grass hill and hit a chain link fence before coming to a stop at the intersection of Woodacres Road and Warwick Circle.

The woman’s name has not been released pending notification of family.

DeKalb County police say a man shot and killed a female taxi driver during a possible robbery at the intersection of Woodacres Road and Warwick Circle in Chamblee.

Police believe the taxi driver picked up a passenger at a nearby Quik Trip convenience store on Buford Highway and was likely robbed at gunpoint.

Chamblee Capt. Ernesto Ford told Channel 2 police dogs sniffed out the suspect, who was hiding in the neighborhood.

Fellow OK Taxi drivers told Channel 2 the woman killed was a nice person and hard worker, who had been robbed about a year before while driving a cab.

Driver Juan Saldarriaga said he and other drivers fear being targeted for robbery.

“It’s getting bad,” Saldarriaga said. “It’s to the point where drivers are getting carry permits and arming themselves because a lot of the times there’s no response from police in time.”
