A knock at the door. Then, a fight and a gunshot.

That's how the fatal shooting of Tyler Ford, a 23-year-old student at the University of West Georgia, played out Wednesday afternoon in Carrollton, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Ford, who was from Athens, was shot in his unit at River Pointe Apartments on Lovvorn Road, officials said.

Police say they found cash and a small amount of marijuana on the floor next to Ford’s body, Channel 2 reported.

“What bothers us,” said Capt. Chris Dobbs of Carrollton Police, “is this individual is still out there, and if this was the motive, you know, he’s liable to do it again.”

The university issued a statement about the incident.

“Our hearts go out to Tyler’s family, friends and fellow students at this extremely difficult time,” spokesman Gary Leftwich said. “Although the incident happened off of our campus, our university police continue to work closely with Carrollton investigators to piece together the facts of what happened and find the person responsible. Our counselors met with students throughout the night and remain available to anyone needing help in coping with this tragic incident.”
