A busy Cobb County intersection was shut down for more than an hour Friday morning after a man ran from police and crashed, leaving two of his passengers with serious injuries.

The incident began sometime after 8 a.m. with a suspicious person call near a mixed-use development on Belmont Park Drive, Smyrna police said.

When police arrived, the driver of an SUV fled the scene, striking one of the responding officers’ patrol cars, Smyrna police spokesman Sgt. Louis Defense said in a Facebook post.

The man refused to stop and police pursued the vehicle, hoping to get the license plate number, authorities said.

After a brief chase, the driver crashed at the intersection of South Cobb Drive and Windy Hill Road before running away, leaving two of his passengers injured at the scene.

Officers recovered two guns from the vehicle, one of which turned out to be stolen, along with felony amounts of marijuana, Defense said.
