5 Georgia prison guards charged with beating inmates

Five state prison guards have been arrested on charges that they beat up inmates and that one of them destroyed the videotape recording of the incident, according to Mitchell County District Attorney Joe Mulholland.

Officers Kevin Davis, Steven Alexander, Eddie King, Deltonio Scott and Darius Knight were fired from their jobs at Autry State Prison in South Georgia and arrested Wednesday. All five were free on bond Thursday.

Davis, Scott and Knight were charged with battery and violating their oaths. King was charged with simple assault and violating his oath. Alexander was charged with tampering with evidence and violating his oath.

The Department of Corrections declined to release any details about the Feb. 8 incident.

“The department takes allegations such as inmate abuse very seriously,” the agency said in an email. “Due to these claims, the department sent internal affairs to investigate. It is believed that the abuse did occur.”

Mulholland said he expects to present the cases to a grand jury for indictment in a few months.
