A Fulton County detention officer found himself on the other side of the bars after his arrest for allegedly encouraging an inmate to use a particular bail bondsman, according to investigators.

Robert James, of Norcross, was charged with violation of oath by public officer, a felony, and engaging in a bail bond business, a misdemeanor charge, his arrest warrants state. James was booked into the Fulton jail Tuesday and released the following day after posting $6,000 bond, jail records showed.

James, who works at the North Fulton annex in Alpharetta, is accused of providing advice to an inmate, which is against state law.

“When it’s alleged someone employed with the sheriff’s office has done something unethical, it’s very serious for us,” Lt. Col. Kirt Beasley told Channel 2 Action News. “The integrity of the sheriff’s office is very important.”

The arrest warrants don’t state whether James profited from his alleged actions. He is on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
