With their 3-year-old daughter in the same car, a young Cobb County couple was shot to death early Thursday, according to police. Family members believe the couple tried to drive for help, but instead crashed in Powder Springs.
Just before 2 a.m. Thursday, Powder Springs police responded to what they thought was a single-vehicle accident along Parks Drive near Sharon Drive.
When they found the car, a red 2000 Pontiac Grand Am, backed into a ditch, they discovered something else: a 24-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds, a 22-year-old woman with at least one gunshot wound and their young daughter, who was unharmed.
The man, identified Thursday afternoon as Anthony Joseph Costner, was already dead. The woman, Catherine Amanda Costner, was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where she later died, Powder Springs police Deputy Chief Matt Boyd said. The child was in the custody of the Department of Family and Children Services, Boyd said.
Police had not publicly identified any suspects. But Catherine Costner’s brother said the three left home last night, saying they were going to meet someone, Channel 2 Action News reported. Jordan Quinn said his brother-in-law and sister seemed nervous when they left. It would be the last time he saw them alive.
Catherine Costner’s mother told Channel 2 she thinks her son-in-law was targeted.
“I think someone had it in for her husband for some reason,” Cynthia Quinn said. “God bless the baby wasn’t hurt.”
The family is hopeful someone will come forward with information about whoever is responsible for the shootings.
“I know somebody knows something,” Quinn said. “And we don’t care. We just want this person brought to justice.”
