Cousin arrested in Brookhaven killing

On his 20th birthday, a Covington man allegedly shot and killed a 20-year-old cousin at a Brookhaven apartment complex, police said Tuesday.

Carlos Eduardo Morales Gallardo was arrested early Tuesday and charged with murder and aggravated assault in the death of Nicolas Morales Garcia at the Esquire Apartments on Buford Highway, Officer Carlos Nino with Brookhaven police said.

Multiple people called 911 Saturday afternoon to report the shooting, and officers arrived to find a man between two buildings with a gunshot wound, police said. Nicolas Morales Garcia died at the scene.

Brookhaven police released a GBI sketch of a man they called a person of interest in the case, and the man was identified as Morales Gallardo, Nino said in an emailed statement. Morales Gallardo turned 20 on Saturday, jail records showed.

“Detectives learned through their investigation that the suspect and victim were relatives,” Nino said. “They believe at this point that the shooting was the result of an ongoing dispute.”

Morales Gallardo was being held without bond Tuesday at the DeKalb County jail.
