A man accused of attacking an officer with a tomahawk and machete inside a Rome Wal-Mart remained in jail Monday.

Police got a call Sunday about a shoplifter inside the store on the 2500 block of Redmond Circle, the Rome News-Tribune reported. Rome police approached the suspect, Steve Allen Reece, 39, of Aragon, but he ran.

One of the officers tackled Reece into a battery stand, the paper reported. Reece then pulled a tomahawk and machete out of his pants and allegedly attacked the officer.

Police were able to get the weapons from Reece.

He and the officer were taken to Floyd Medical Center with minor injuries.

Reece was charged with felony aggravated assault, felony obstruction of an officer, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime and shoplifting, according to jail records.

He remains in the Floyd County jail on $11,200 bond.
