A pilot is dead after a small plane crashed near an airport in North Georgia on Tuesday afternoon, authorities confirmed.
The aircraft was found near the Monroe-Walton County Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration told Channel 2 Action News.
A man was the only person on the plane, and he died at a hospital, police told Channel 2. His name has not been released, but he was a resident of the area and a friend of local law enforcement, police said.
Police Chief R.V. Watts said the man, who was born in 1980, was flying a single-engine plane that belonged to someone else, the Walton Tribune reported. The pilot had been working on the aircraft and was circling back to land when the crash occurred.
The plane was found on a hillside between the runway and Richard Parsons Drive, the newspaper reported.
No information is available about the cause of the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board was called to investigate the incident.
