An Alpharetta police dog was rushed into emergency surgery after chasing two robbery suspects over a wall and falling 30 feet.

The dog, named Mattis, was out of surgery and in stable condition, police wrote in a Facebook post.

“He was treated for a lacerated liver, heavy internal bleeding and other issues,” police said.

The incident started Saturday with a police pursuit. The suspects got out of a car, ran from police and “unknowingly leaped off of a 30 foot wall attempting to escape,” according to another Facebook post. “Our (police dog) followed staying in chase against the suspects and also unknowingly went over the wall.”

Police have not said if the suspects were injured. They were arrested and taken into police custody after police said they found dozens of cellphones, credit cards and IDs. The suspects’ names were not released.

Mattis is expected to make a full recovery.

“He has a long road ahead but he will be fine,” police said.
