A routine traffic stop in Douglas County turned into a major drug bust that netted about $250,000 worth of methamphetamine, authorities said.
About 7:04 p.m. Monday, Deputy Bryan Tolbert stopped a black Kia Sedona for a traffic violation on I-20 near the Tyson Road overpass, sheriff’s office spokesman Sgt. Jesse Hambrick said in a news release.
As he began to issue a written warning, Tolbert had suspicions that prompted him to ask for consent to search the van, according to the release.
The driver, Melvin Fairman, consented, and Tolbert found a cardboard box in the rear of the van that contained about 13.4 pounds of methamphetamine in bags, Hambrick said.

Fairman was arrested without incident and was charged with trafficking in methamphetamine, the sheriff’s office said.
