A party in Middle Georgia ended in tragedy this week when a 4-year-old boy died after being pulled from the deep end of a swimming pool.

Caleb Strickland of Warner Robins was the youngest child at the party Tuesday on Lindsey Drive in Byron and he knew how to swim, the Macon Telegraph reported. But as the other children left the pool to eat dinner, no one noticed Strickland staying behind.

When adults saw him in the deep end, they jumped in and soon started CPR, according to Sgt. Melanie Bickford of the Byron Police Department.

Strickland was rushed to Peach County Hospital, where he briefly stabilized, before he died Wednesday at Children’s Hospital in Macon.

“He had been without oxygen for too long,” Bickford told the Telegraph.

The incident will not result in charges, and police said they found no evidence of negligence.

“It was just one of those bizarre accidents,” Bickford told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

After Strickland’s death, police emphasized the importance of parents watching their children at swimming pools.

“This is an accident that can be avoided by simply taking precautions with small children and water,” Bickford said in a news release.
