The man suspected of killing a 23-year-old Cobb County father first robbed the victim of his iPhone and cash before shooting him multiple times, according to police.
Darius Jarrell Dunn, also 23, was arrested early Saturday at his Mableton home and charged with murder, aggravated assault and armed robbery, Cobb jail records showed. Dunn is accused of killing Anthony Terrell Tavarez on Sept. 16 at the Windwood Apartments on Shenandoah Trail in Austell, his arrest warrant states.
Tavarez, the son of a retired longtime Atlanta police officer, was the father of a 1-year-old and his girlfriend is pregnant with his second child, family members said. Tavarez did not live in the complex where he was killed, his family said. His funeral was held Monday, his online obituary stated.
According to his arrest warrant, Dunn pointed a gun and grabbed Tavarez’s pockets in order to rob him.
“The accused did rip the victim’s pocket from his pants and said property was removed,” the warrant states. “The accused then shot the victim in the back while the victim was trying to flee on foot and the result of the gunshot caused the victim’s death.”
Dunn has a prior felony record and was released from state prison in July 2012 after serving just over a year, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections. According to police, Dunn was previously convicted of theft by taking. At the time of his recent arrest, he was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, booking records showed.
Dunn was being held without bond Monday morning at the Cobb jail.
