The driver of a sedan was killed on I-285 overnight after the vehicle slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer that ran out of gas.

The tractor-trailer had stopped in the gore area on the ramp from I-285 North to I-20 West in southwest Atlanta while it waited for a fuel delivery, according to police. A Lincoln Town Car hit it from behind about 12:30 a.m. Friday.

The driver of the Lincoln was dead at the scene, Atlanta police spokesman Officer Steve Avery said in a statement. While the driver’s name was not released, Channel 2 Action News reported he is a 39-year-old man.

The crash shut down the exit ramp, and all northbound lanes of I-285 were blocked for a time before authorities cleared the scene.

During the investigation, inner loop traffic was forced off the interstate onto I-20 East, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

Authorities reopened the lanes just before 4 a.m., the Traffic Center reported.

“The Atlanta Police Department’s Accident Investigation Unit is continuing the investigation, but no charges are anticipated,” Avery said.
