Atlanta police officer charged with DUI

An Atlanta police officer is awaiting a hearing on his employment status after being arrested on a DUI charge over the weekend.

According to a Georgia State Patrol report, a trooper witnessed a silver Honda Accord going north on I-85 at 17th Street at 101 mph around 2:20 a.m Saturday. When the trooper pulled the vehicle over, he reportedly found Adam Lee, an officer with the Atlanta Police Department, behind the wheel.

The trooper noted that Lee had bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. A test of Lee’s breath showed a blood-alcohol level of 0.186 — over the legal limit of 0.08, the report said.

Lee asked the trooper if he would turn off the patrol car’s camera, to which the trooper responded that he could not, according to his report. The trooper then asked if Lee had something he wanted to say, and it was then that Lee looked down at a small card around his neck, which the trooper noted was an APD ID card.

Lee was arrested without incident.

APD spokesman Ralph Woolfolk said the department’s Office of Professional Standards opened a second and separate investigation into Lee after being informed of his arrest Saturday. Lee already was relieved of duty and on administrative assignment due to an investigation into an incident in which he allegedly showed up to the training academy with alcohol on his breath.

Lee is now awaiting an emergency hearing with APD Chief George Turner in the next three to five days to determine his employment status. Until then, Lee remains on administrative assignment and relieved of duty, Woolfolk said.
