“We can help.”

That's the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition's message to intown residents abd commuters seeking new ways around the traffic problems created by last week's I-85 bridge collapse.

The group, which says it “works to make Atlanta better by bike” puts the pedal to the metal Friday with its first “Hack Your Commute” event.

There’ll be four “Hack” sessions over the next week, all aimed at people who are rethinking driving in the wake of the interstate shutdown and its ripple effects. They’re BYOB (bring your own bike) affairs, starting out with some quick drills in Piedmont Park. That will be followed by a group ride through neighborhoods and to destinations particularly affected by Atlanta’s suddenly rewritten traffic patterns.

Led by an experienced “car-free” rider, the hack sessions will familiarize participants  with different types of bike lanes and other aspects of smart and safe cycling on city streets. The goal: “to lift your urban bike riding confidence,” ABC says.

It's just one way the group is attempting to help Atlantans deal with the "fallout" of the interstate disaster. A dedicated "I-85 Collapse" section of its web site offers information and resources for bike sharing, route planning, biking to MARTA stations and more.

The four “Hack Your Commute” events are at 6 p.m. on Friday; 1 p.m. on Sunday; 11 a.m. on Monday  (April 10) and 6 p.m. on April 14. Bring a bike and helmet.
