A fire destroyed the roof of an 18-unit condo complex in Roswell, displacing a dozen families.

A fire at a Roswell condominium building Monday afternoon caused concern for both residents of the complex and occupants of an elementary school across the street, but it resulted in no injuries.

Roswell police alerted residents about the fire at the Landing at Martin Lakes condominiums, which are just across Martin Road from Esther Jackson Elementary School, just after 2:20 p.m. The Roswell Fire Department shut down a section of Martin Road to battle the fire, blocking the road just before after-school pickup.

The fire destroyed the roof of an 18-unit building in the condo complex, displacing 20 residents, according to Red Cross spokeswoman Sherry Nicholson. Martin Road remained shut down as fire crews battled the flames for nearly 2½ hours. It reopened just before 5 p.m.

No injuries were reported to either residents or firefighters. The Red Cross will provide temporary housing and other necessities for the displaced families, Nicholson said.
