The Atlanta History Center is one of several museums that will host programming about civil rights on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The federal holiday occurs on King’s birthday, Jan. 16. King would have been 88 this year.
The Atlanta History Center will offer free admission at its Buckhead location, as well as at Margaret Mitchell House on this day.
In addition to being able to explore current exhibits such as “Gatheround: Stories of Atlanta,” the museum will offer unique programming throughout the day.
Featured speaker and author of “Go South to Freedom” Frye Gaillard will talk about his book, which is geared toward middle-school kids, at 3 p.m. The event will also include a book signing.
Families can participate in a freedom ride simulation at 10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 2 p.m. The theatrical simulation lasts 40 minutes.
These are just two of the activities that will take place at the Atlanta History Center on Jan. 16.
Only one activity will take place at Margaret Mitchell House. Atlanta History Center historian Calinda Lee will talk about the Georgians who helped shape King, as well as the people who have fought for civil rights after his death, in a 45-minute presentation beginning at noon.
The Atlanta History Center and Margaret Mitchell House will be open from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
