Complaining without offering solutions

"Something that an employee may not realize they are doing is coming to their supervisor with problems they are having and not offering any solutions of their own in the process," said Melinda Ottinger, office manager of ServPro of North Fulton County. "This will ultimately make you look like a complainer and not someone who will help the company grow."

Submitting incomplete work

Atlanta-based office manager Chad Hutchinson advised against submitting deliverables that aren't ready to go. "Anything that obviously has not been checked closely enough to be able to go out as is will hurt your chances of being seen as a valuable employee," he said. And if you do it often enough, your promotion chances will start to dwindle.

Bringing your bad mood to work

Susan Prochnow, a department manager for a Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelter store, advised employees to present a good mood. "I don't care what's going on in your life," she said. "Unless you can present an upbeat attitude and leave your issues at the door, no one is going to be interested in giving you work with more responsibility."
